“Okay, I’d like to show you about Indonesia’s Traditional Song! While I’m playing it, I’ll play this violin, Check it out!!”, said Hafiz, one of Encompass Journey of Understanding Recruitment 2011 participants  in the Indonesia Presentation Night. That was one among several sessions in the event.

Encompass Alumnus held the Encompass Journey of Understanding Recruitment 2011 on 10TH -12TH December 2010 in Malang-East Java. The Event took place at Cangar, a recreational area in 2-hour journey by car uphill and famous with it’s hot water spring. The temperature was soooo cold, but it was okay! It purposed to bring the participant into unusual condition adapting with their new surroundings within a short time.
It  started with a briefing previously on 5th November 2010 on YEPE’s Office for the big 12 candidates. Big??? Yeah, they had been selected from the sequence earlier test : writing, interview, and cultural presentation test. The first test had been followed by 25 participants, came from senior high school and college student. From the briefing on the 5th November, they were divided into 2 groups, which each group had a responsibility to make a breakfast for the other group during the event.

Friday, 10th December 2010

The 12 candidates gathered in Jl.Metro 15, and stayed there for one night. They  started to know each other by introducing and sharing their story, however they come from different college and different part of Indonesia. Mr.Data Pela (YEPE) had a chance to gave his welcoming speech and organization discussion.

Saturday, 11th December 2010

It was time for Breakfast and Group 1 cooked for Group 2. The menu was fried rice, niceeeee! At 9 o’clock, the committee and participant moved to Cangar by public transportation for  about 2 hours. It was about 11 o’clock they arrived in the site. In the mid-day, the first session began and followed by other sessions. The activities were such as (in a sequential order):

• Cross the line, purposed to know each participant’s side of life and also their argument

• Sudden Speech, was lead by Gading

• Indonesia Presentation
Sunday, 12th December 2010.

There was a ‘crazy’ plan from the committee (alumnus). But, after the session passed, it wasn’t crazy anymore. In the dawn time, at about 2 am, the participant were woke up by the committee and their eyes were closed by a scarf. Participants were walking in line as a train, someone became the leader in front and one became the ‘savior’ at rear. They followed  Dista’s command (committee) and they didn’t expect that they would go to the Hot Water Pool.
After arrived there (pool), the ‘night session’ was started (not night anymore I think, because it was 4 am). It was sharing time!!! Each of the 12’s shared about what they had got and felt from the activities.
This day, Group 2 cooked for Group 1 by menu: can-sardine and egg.
Next session of the day was final discussion. I supposed it was hotter and briefer than previous ones. The discussion was about Leader in Jogjakarta, and Encompass Reality (and it was an exciting discussion when we talked about Encompass)

Yuhuuuuuiiiii, finish!

Getting new experience, friends, family and soon are the expectation of the participants by joining this activity. Alumni of JOU, who actively as a member of Encompass Indonesia, also have some expectation. Besides the alumni want to find a ‘new friends’ for Encompass Indonesia, the main point is that they can share what they’ve got from UK. And in this ‘Encompass Indonesia founding’ process, alumni try to spread the Encompass vision and mission by doing writing activity in their campus, doing presentation, adapting JOU activity in their particular event, and so on. Bernafas Seminggu di Tengah Perbedaan

“Keberagaman dan perbedaan manusia tidak akan pernah dihindari di muka bumi ini. Mau tidak mau, kita juga harus ikut merasakan bagaimana berada di antara perbedaan tersebut. Ya! Karena kita manusia dan kita hidup di dunia. Dan bagaimana bila kita ditempatkan di suatu situasi yang benar-benar berbeda dengan kehidupan kita sehari-hari? Dengan lingkungan ekstrim yang berbeda,  orang-orang yang berbeda, kebudayaan dan life style yang berbeda, dan pada akhirnya pengalaman hidop yang berbedalah yang kita dapatkan”. Inilah yang saya alami selama kurang lebih sembilan hari, 22-30 November 2009, dalam program Encompass Journey of Understanding, di Glasgow-Fort William, Scotlandia.

Encompass merupakan yayasan yang didirikan oleh Keluarga Braden dari Inggris. Setelah peristiwa bom Bali yang menewaskan salah seorang putra mereka, Daniel Braden, paradigma dunia Barat seakan memojokkan Islam dan mengaitkannya dengan aksi terorisme. Akan tetapi, Keluarga Braden memiliki pandangan lain tentang peristiwa yang merenggut ratusan nyawa itu. Mandy, ibu Daniel Braden, akhirnya memiliki keinginan untuk mengumpulkan pemuda-pemuda dari beberapa Negara -Amerika, Inggris, Israel, Palestina dan Indonesia- , untuk berkumpul dalam rangka meluruskan pandangan-pandangan miring yang selama beredar melalui kegiatan Outbound dan diskusi.

Kegiatan pagi,,,selama kurang lebih 9 hari, kami berkegiatan Outbound di kawasan Outward Bound Centre Loch Eil, Scotlandia. Kegiatan tersebut dimulai pada pukul 9 pagi dan diakhiri pukul 5 sore. Team work yang terjadi ketika Outbound tersebut, semakin mengasah kedekatan dan keakraban kami untuk saling mengenal lebih dalam satu sama lain. Kegiatan Outboundnya antara lain Jumping, Abseiling, Rock Climbing, Canoeing, Rafting, dan game-game kecil lainnya. Itu semua tidak mungkin akan kami lakukan tanpa adanya support dan kerja sama antar peserta.

Kegiatan malam,,,setelah beroutbound ria, di malam hari setelah dinner, ada kegiatan diskusi. Sebelum berdiskusi tentang masalah-masalah terkini, sang Instruktur –Snezana dari Serbia dan Raaj dar London- selalu melakukan warming up terlebih dahulu dengan game-game individu maupun kelompok. Tapi lebih sering dibentuk kelompok-kelompok kecil untuk membicarakan tentang keluarga, kehidupan sehari-hari, kebudayaan di negara masing-masing, dll. Menjelang malam, sekitar pukul 9 malam, diskusi yang lumayan berbobot dimulai. Contoh masalahnya seperti bagaimana menyikapi perkawinan beda agama, pasangan homoseksualitas, ada juga sesi menjawab pertanyaan seputar negara masing2 yang dilontarkan oleh peserta lain. Diskusi ini bukan untuk diperdebatkan, namun lebih untuk menggali opini-opini dari sudut pandang yang berbeda.

Headline hari-hari spesial. Selama program ini berlangsung, ada beberapa perayaan-perayaan yang kita lakukan.

Idul Adha (27 November 2009), meskipun tidak ada potong kambing maupun sapi, tapi shalat Idul Adha di pagi itu terasa spesial bersama pemuda-pemuda Palestina. Meskipun hanya di dalam ruangan kecil, tapi kami bisa melaksanakan Shalat Ied dengan khusyu’ dan suasana damai.

Thanks Giving (26 November 2009), perayaan ini merupakan salah satu budaya orang Amerika. Sebelum menyantap makan malam, kami duduk melingkar di meja makan  dan bergantian mengucapkan ucapan terima kasih kepada apa saja dan siapa saja yang sangat berarti di kehidupan kita.

Syahbat (setiap hari Sabtu), adalah kebudayaan orang Israel. Di hari Jumat, 20 menit sebelum matahari tenggelam, mereka dilarang untuk melakukan aktivitas kerja di luar rumah. Dan di malam hari sebelum makan malam, mereka melakukan ritual kecil dengan membaca doa-doa khusus dan nyanyian religi. Ibadah ini dilakukan sampai keesokan harinya, Sabtu, sebelum matahari tenggelem.

Cultural Program,.di malam terakhir sebelum acara penutupan, ada acara pementasan kebudayaan dari masing-masing negara. Palestina dengan tari……………, Israel dengan lagu negara dan kostum sehari-harinya, USA dengan drama tentang kota-kota terkenal di Amerika, UK dengan budaya sehari-hari orang British, dan Indonesia yang cukup fantastis! Kami delegasi Indonesia membawakan permainan adat Kalimantan, Tari Remo, dan Tari topeng Bapang, Dan pertunjukkan penutup dari Indonesia, cukup membuat antusias seisi ruangan.

Feed back,, apa yang didapatkan dari program ini menurut saya pribadi adalah: selain pengalaman hidup diantara orang-orang yang memiliki perbedaan budaya dengan kita, saya pun semakin bangga menjadi warga negara Indonesia. Banyak peserta Encompass yang tidak tahu tentang Negara Indonesia secara dalam. Yang mereka lontarkan adalah kata-kata island, spicy, tourrism dan BALI. Lewat keanekaragaman budaya yang kita miliki, mulai dari keramahan orang Indonesia, sambal pecel dan ABC, abon dan kering tempe, sampai tari-tarian, saya dan teman-teman berusaha untuk memperkenalkan Indonesia lebih dalam pada mereka, dalam hati kecil kami “Ini lo Rek, INDONESIA!”. Dan yang paling penting, meskipun sekarang konflik terjadi antara Israel Palestina, tapi ternyata di dalam kehidupan sehari-hari, kami pun bisa hidup akur dan bertoleransi. Apa yang digembor-gemborkan media saat ini adalah masalah politik semata. Dan yang kami rasakan adalah, kami dapat hidup berdampingan dengan  keanekaragaman budaya di dalam kehidupan nyata. PEACE!

A Week Breathe in the Middle of Differences

“The human diversity and differences will never be avoided in the face of this earth. Like it or not, we must also experience how to be between them. Yes! Because we are human beings and we live in this kind of world. And how it feel to be placed in a situation that completely different with our daily lives? Extremely different environments, people with different cultures and life style, and ultimately different life experience that we’ve get “. This quote explained what I’ve experienced for about nine days, at 22-30 November 2009, on Encompass’ Journey of Understanding program, in Glasgow-Fort William, Scotland.

Encompass is a foundation set up by Braden Family of England. After the Bali bombings that killed one of their sons, Daniel Braden, the paradigm of the Western world seemed to discredit Islam and linked it with acts of terrorism. However, Braden’s family has a different view about the events that claimed hundreds of lives it. Mandy, Daniel Braden’s Mother, finally has a desire to gather young people from several ‘conflicts’ countries: America, England, Israel, Palestine and Indonesia, to gather in order to straighten crooked perspectives through outbound activities and discussions.

Daylight, for about 9 days, we were doing activities on Outward Bound Center in Loch Eil, Scotland. The activity started at 9 am and end at 5 pm. Team work that occurs at outbound activities, sharpening our closeness and intimacy to know each other more deeply. Activities were including Jumping, Abseiling, Rock Climbing, Canoeing, Rafting, and other ‘ground’ games. That all was not possible to do without supports and cooperation among participants.

Night, after challenging outbound activities and dinner in the evening, there was discussion activities. Before discussing the latest problems, our Serbian facilitator-Snezana and the Londoners dar Raaj always do warming up games in groups or individuals, but more often formed small groups to talk about family, daily life, culture in their respective countries, etc. The night, around 9 o’clock, the heavier discussion begins. problems examples such as how to address different religious marriage or homosexual couples. There are also sessions to answer questions about each country asked by other participants. This discussion is not to debate, but rather to explore the opinions from a different perspective.

Headlines on  special days. During this program progresses, there are some festivals that we do.

Idul Adha (November 27, 2009), although there is no goat, sheep nor cow, but Idul Adha prayers in the morning feel special with Palestinian youth. Although only in a small room, but we can perform Eid prayer with khusyu in peaceful atmosphere.

Thanks Giving (November 26, 2009), this celebration is one of American culture. Before dinner, we sat around the table and took turns saying thank you to anything and anyone that really means in our lives.

Syahbat (every Saturday), is the Israel’s .culture On Friday, the 20 minutes before sunset, they were forbidden to perform work activities outside the home. And at night before dinner, they do little ritual by reading special prayers and religious songs. Worship is done until the next day, Saturday, before the sunset.

Cultural Program, on the last night before the farewell, there are the cultural performances from each country. Palestinians with their dance, Israel with their song and daily outfits, USA with a drama about the famous cities in US., UK with the daily culture of the British, and Indonesia, which is fantastic! Our delegation brought Indonesia Kalimantan indigenous game, Remo Dance, and Bapang Mask Dance.The closing shows from Indonesia was brought enthusiastic to the whole room.

Feed back,, what we’ve gained from this program, my personal think is: in addition to experience life among the people who have cultural differences with us, I was more proud to be Indonesian citizens. Before, many Encompass’s participants do not know about Indonesia, which they launched Indonesia with some words: islands, spicy, tourism and BALI. Through the diversity of our culture; from the friendliness of Indonesian, ABC spicy ketchup, peanut ‘pecel’ sauce, dry fried tempe, ‘abon’, and the dance; me and my friends tried to introduce more in Indonesia on them, in our little hearts’ “Ini lo Rek , INDONESIA!”—Hey folks! This is Indonesia!. And most important, though currently, the conflict between Israel Palestine still keep running, but in fact, in everyday life, we can live together and tolerate each other. What media exposed today is more tend to political issue. And what we feel is actually that we can live in harmony with cultural diversity in real life. PEACE!

“In the early morning, Mr. Heroe came to the AKABRI house, picked us up to do some activities. First, we had have convert our pocket money in money changer (each of us got 50 Euro and some Pounds). Then, we went to Jl. Lamandau-Bulungan where Setyo Rahmadi’s Office laid for giving YEPE Kehormatan for Mr. Setyo. Next, Mr. Heroe had his glowing conversation with Mr. Setyo and Mr. Cahyo (the International Cameramen, the latest project was took a picture of penguin in North Pole).”

“In the mid day, we leaved for Lamandau and went to Senayan, we had a delicious Iga Sapi Soup (Hmmm….infact, Mr. Heroe heard our stomach shout,,,hehehe). Then, we had a special trip by Bus way to Monas, while Mr. Heroe had his meeting in KONI. “

“Wuwuwu…although we didn’t went into monas, but we had a special video recording in the National Museum. Fortunately, we took an opportunity visited National Culture Department and we got some booklets  about Indonesia which we would brought to Scotland.”

“That was our last day in Jakarta. At 3 pm we had have leave for AKABRI, waited the taxi, move to Soekarno Hatta Airport Cengakareng-Tangerang. We met Mr. Bambang Sarasno for a moment, then we had have checked in. Chantal’s Song sounding in our mind,, all my bags are packed down I’m ready to go, I’m standing here outside ur door, I hate to wake you up to say goodbye,, So kiss me and smile for me, tell me that you’ll wait for me, hold me like you’ll never let me go, cause I’m leaving on a KLM plane…”

“Then, the next headlines are: Lost in the Changi Airport- Singapore. We drive the wrong sky train, wrong terminal, and we missed the plane! Fortunately, we had the next flight with the same number and destination. Hfff…”

“Erika waited for us in the lobby of Glasgow Airport, “Hiiiii Indonesian!”, in the cold air we felt, we got a warm hug from Erika! Hehehe…. Then we moved to the Young Hostel, waited for the other participant. We had 2 hours left, so we walked around the Hostel, took some pictures, and adapted with the time and the air, JET LAG and COLD! In the evening, all participant were gathered and we had an ordinary activity, yeah…nice introduction. We told our name, followed by the artists’ name with the same beginning alphabet with ours. For example, Dhimas David Beckham, Silka Syakira, Reza Robert Pattinson, and Fina F. Then, we continued or activity until 11 pm with game and making a team yells “

Although there’s no valuable thing that we could give for them, but we have already tried to give a lot of Indonesia Information. We also try to know each other from different country and get the important lesson, DON’T JUDGE THE BOOK FROM THE COVER!
